Color Calibration for Home Theaters

Electronics stores often run the same video agenda to a wide amount of displays to give you a opportunity to rate the picture capability of each. Step back a few feet and you will see a primary unlikeness between the colors represented. Some look great and some look awful, and it is not always the capability of the Tv that is to blame.

Often, the Tv needs to be calibrated to its environment for the best performance. stores are notorious for turning up the color and image brightness to make the displays more eye catching - image capability isn't usually their biggest concern.

Calibrating Your Home Theater Television Will:
Let you see movies as the Director intended Improve the shadow and highlight details improving the realism of the movies you watch Improve your total viewing experience Give you the pleasure of knowing that your new television is working at its optimum settings.

How Do You Get the Best picture from Your New Tv?

Assuming you have managed to make a purchasing decision and are now the owner of a new Plasma, Lcd, or Rear angle television, what next? Doesn't the facility adjust the settings properly? Should you just play nearby with the settings until you get frustrated and quit?

Factories have a range of tolerances that are thought about accepted for capability control. They have to weight the cost of thought about tuning each unit against the profits they will make selling them. The settings you get will be acceptable, but may not be the best capability that the television is capable of displaying. When you start spending thousands of dollars on a television, you want to see the capability you paid for. Also, the manufacturers have no idea of the source of your Tv signal or what Dvd player, cables, and other devices are in your home theater system. All of these things impact your television's performance.

Getting the best capability from your television can be difficult. If you don't understand how to calibrate your television, you are likely going to make things worse and not better. Television output facilities have teams of engineers who are specially trained to calibrate the pictures on the monitors they use. This ensures consistency between separate monitors and accuracy when displaying the image in the video signal. They have extra test patterns that they display and very exact processes they employ to get the job done. It is a very technical task with a steep studying curve.

For the Anti Do-It-Yourselfer

Hire a Isf certified calibration technician to come in and tune your system. This will cost you a few hundred dollars. If you have already spent thousands on your home theater, it will be well worth the extra few dollars. The technician will not only have all the tools and training to do the job right, he or she will also have a professional relationship with the major manufacturers which will likely give them passage to adjustment settings that are inaccessible to the consumer (usually to keep you from ruining the set while fiddling with the controls.)

If you want to hire a technician, visit the Imaging Science Foundation website and use their directory to find a technician near you.

For The Hands-On Home Theater Owner

If you would like to do the calibration work yourself, there are two ways to go about the process. Purchase a set of calibration patterns on Dvd and spend a few days on the Internet researching how to use them and in what sequence you should make your adjustments, or Purchase a computer software and hardware container that will guide you straight through the process.

There are a amount of Dvds available with sets of audio and video test patterns. The Avia Guide to Home Theater and Digital Video Essentials are both easily available on the web. Read the reviews and see which you like best. As for researching the process, I suggest you start by visiting the Imaging Science Foundation website and reading straight through their online resources.

On the software/hardware side of things there is the Colorvision Stv100 Spyder Tv Colormeter. This container is a composition of hardware, software, and a Dvd with test patterns. You setup the software on your Pc, connect the colorimeter device to the Usb port, stick the colorimeter on the television screen with the attached suction cups, and display the test patterns from the Dvd on the Tv. (Unless your Pc is next to the television, you will want to have a laptop for this process.) The software will analyze the data coming from the colorimeter and give you instructions for the contrast, brightness, color, tint, and color climatic characteristic adjustments you will need to make to optimize your television picture. It removes the guess work from the process by giving you scientific measurements of you television picture to work from.

The Colorvision Spyder Tv Colormeter also gives you a complete record of the changes you make for hereafter reference.

No matter which formula you choose, you owe it to yourself to calibrate your home theater ideas to contact the full range of capability it is capable of - you paid for it!

Lcd Tv? 1080p? How to Pick Lcd Hdtv Set - Secrets They Don't Want You to Know

What about a good fancy to get a 1080p Lcd Tv ?

First of all, what Is a 1080p panel? The panel or screen display is what you are watching and it is built up of pixels or picture Elements. Or, Pix. Els. That is where the name comes from.
Ok here's the thing, the pixel count determines whether it can display a 1080p picture in native mode inside Lcd tvs. Why? The 1080p panel has a fixed pixel estimate of 2,073,000 pixels and can only display in that format, so everything that doesn't fit the panel must be processed or wide to fit.
This is how any Lcd Tv or any digital flat panel tv, like Plasma Hdtv, with a fixed estimate of pixels works.
A 1080i (With lines) picture is fed to the processor inside the Tv, and becomes 1080p (No lines), simply by adding the lines together. This is called Upconverting or upscaling, or expanding the video signal. What a computer does with all types of files, it can "Zip" and "Unzip" them. Except when video files are zipped, or Downconverted, they don't appear to lose quality. But when they are unzipped, or Upconverted, they may appear to lose a Lot. This is because the imperfections of a lower resolution signal are wide along with the good stuff. On the other hand, the apparent quality of a Dvd is improved by removing the lines, a major correction for any signal. Remember here, we are talking about streaming video files, to borrow a computer term.
A Real 1080p picture or signal can only come from a Blu-Ray disc player or a Ps3, or an Upconverting Dvd player, at the moment, but more options will become ready as new technologies are created. And it looks great on a 1080p panel.
The signal is displayed just as it comes from the player at 1080p, via a Hdmi cable, and this is the easiest to use cable selection currently for 1080p connection. Any other signal like Free To Air Broadcasts which are whether 720p (No Lines) or 1080i (Lines) will be upconverted or kind of "Unzipped" in the built in video processing hardware inside the Hdtv set, to 1080p. simply the quality of Lcd panel and the quality of video hardware will mean the best results. See "10 Bit" below.
This leads to a special case of economy sets being sold with lcd flat panel types which have an 8 bit or 6 bit panel and corresponding processing hardware. Now when these sets have a 6 or 8 bit panel, for very complicated reasons, you can approximately bet that it will be a fast panel. simply because the math that the circuitry needs to achieve on the video signal is easier, and faster, so takes less time. These are ordinarily smaller screen sizes ordinarily less than 26", and it is also possible that it is a panel originally designed for computer display.
Which explains the weird screen resolutions like 1440, 1280, etc in advertisements. Avoid these types of screens unless you are using it for a Pc. Although some look good with a Pc, and bad with Tv, some are bad with both. Meaning cheaper, no name brands. On the other hand, 10 bit panels can be made as fast using new technology, and they will have to be much higher quality, because ordinarily they are made only by a few well known manufacturers. Only a select group of manufacturers actually make their own glass for lcd flat panels. How To Pick An Lcd Tv that contains a cheap panel? A sure fire method is: Stand close to the screen and whether look down at the screen, or look up at the screen from below. If the picture changes color or becomes negative, bingo. Don't buy it.
10 bit lcd flat panels are more than fast enough to deal with the display of 1080p video signals and 10 bit video processing is also much higher quality, great for movies etc.
That being said, surprisingly one of the best panels to get if you are a sports nut is 720p. It is also economy then 1080p. Video displayed on this type of panel is lower information but great for high speed motion. This lower information is not actually noticeable unless you get a very big screen. Especially if you go for very large screen sizes, like 50", or larger, it will be very distinct that is 720p. Any advantage of 720p will be canceled out with a Lcd Tv 1080p display with 120hz refresh. This technology is becoming very common now. It means that any benefits of 720p, namely for sports etc, are negated. We'll leave that subject for a later discussion.
The take home message from all of this is, 1080p is the display of selection for citizen who want to take advantage of Hdtv to the maximum. But You must stick with known name brands when selecting the best lcd tv from the wide range of models with 1080p panels. That way, you ensure that you get at least a 10 bit panel and at minimum 10 bit video processing.
As an example, many Lcd Hdtv sets use 14 bit video processing and 10 Bit 1080p panels in their range. A high quality Lcd Tv 1080p will reproduce True Hdtv, this will ensure you get an Lcd Tv distinction ratio that is at the highest level, and brightness levels and color gradations are the best possible and therefore ensuring quality picture reproduction.
